Lagavulin 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky Special Release 2018

The 2017 release of cask-strength Lagavulin 12 Year Old won the award for Best Single Malt Scotch 12-15 Years (Multiple Casks) in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2019, so we were excited to taste the 2018 version and find out that it’s every bit as good…

A touch more sweetness than previous editions, it conjures up the maritime character of fishing villages, smokehouses and crashing waves, alongside charred lemon, smoking bonfire embers, barbequed marshmallows, rosemary oil, coal tar soap, salted caramel and green olive brine flecked with orange zest.

Compared to the classic 16 Year Old at 43%, the 12 Year Old has so much energy and zip and bottled at 57.8% it carries a lot more firepower. Cask-strength bottlings from this distillery are always a rare treat and we love this 15th limited edition. Aged purely in American oak – as Lagavulin is wont to do – it’s an absolute cracker.
